How to Detail a Car Like a Professional (Step-by-Step Process Used by Detail Shops)
If you’ve ever wondered how professional detailers clean cars so quickly while still delivering incredible results, the answer is simple: they follow a system.
After more than 8 years of detailing vehicles, refining our workflow, and making hundreds of small improvements, we developed a standard operating procedure (SOP) that allows us to clean vehicles efficiently without missing anything.
This professional car detailing process helps:
-
Reduce missed areas
-
Speed up detailing time
-
Improve consistency between vehicles
-
Deliver better results for customers
Whether you’re a professional detailer, starting a detailing business, or just want to clean your own car better, this step-by-step guide will show you exactly how we detail vehicles in our shop.
Step-by-Step Professional Car Detailing Process
Step 1: Position the Vehicle Properly
Start by pulling the vehicle into the shop or positioning it in a mobile detailing setup where you can comfortably work around the entire vehicle.
Proper positioning prevents wasted time moving equipment or repositioning the vehicle later.
Step 2: Remove All Floor Mats
Remove all rubber and carpet floor mats before starting the detail.
This allows you to clean the mats separately and gives them time to dry while you continue working on the rest of the vehicle.
Step 3: Clean the Floor Mats
Rubber Floor Mats
Spray the mats with an all-purpose cleaner such as Mr. Detail Magic or KCX MS or KCX Green Star using a pump sprayer.
-
Spray the cleaner onto the mats
-
Agitate with a stiff brush
-
Pressure wash thoroughly
Cleaning mats first allows them to dry while the rest of the vehicle is being detailed.
Carpet Floor Mats
-
Vacuum or blow debris off the mats
-
Spray carpet cleaner such as Carpet Bomber or Mr. Detail All Surface or KCX Pol Star
-
Agitate using a brush or drill brush
-
Rinse with a pressure washer
After cleaning, hang mats on a mat clip or remove excess water using a wet/dry vacuum or carpet extractor.
Step 4: Pre-Treat the Exterior
Before washing the vehicle, spray an all-purpose cleaner (APC) on areas that collect heavy grime:
-
Wheel wells
-
Front bumper
-
Grille
-
Mirror caps
Good options include:
-
Koch Chemie Green Star
-
Koch Chemie Multi Star
-
Mr. Detail Magic
Use a bug sponge or mesh scrubber to remove bug buildup, then rinse the front end and wheel wells.
This step helps break down heavy contamination before the wash process begins.
Step 5: Clean the Engine Bay (Optional)
If the service includes an engine bay detail:
-
Spray a degreaser such as Koch Chemie Green Star
-
Rinse the underside of the hood first
-
Lightly rinse engine bay plastics
Use a 40-degree pressure washer tip to reduce pressure and avoid forcing water into sensitive areas.
After rinsing:
-
Blow out standing water with compressed air
-
Apply dressing such as Koch Chemie Motor Plast or Mr. Detail Dress Up
The dressing will self-level, leaving the engine bay clean and evenly finished.
Step 6: Clean Tires and Wheels
Spray tire cleaner or degreaser such as:
-
Koch Chemie Green Star
Mr. Detail RED40
Scrub the tire thoroughly to remove tire browning and prepare the rubber for dressing.
Next apply a wheel cleaner like:
-
Mr. Detail 2 Step Wheel Combo
-
Koch Chemie Magic Wheel Cleaner
-
P&S Brake Buster
Scrub the wheel and rinse thoroughly.
Step 7: Foam the Vehicle
Use a foam cannon to apply car soap.
For normal washes use:
-
Koch Chemie Gentle Snow Foam
-
P&S Pearl
-
Mr Detail Cherry
For heavily contaminated vehicles use stronger foam such as:
-
Koch Chemie Active Foam
-
Koch Chemie Super Foam
-
Mr Detail Restart
Allow the foam to dwell to break down road film and dirt.
Step 8: Hand Wash the Vehicle
Using a bucket with a grit guard and a wash mitt, wash the vehicle from top to bottom.
Wash one panel at a time, rinsing your mitt on the grit guard after each panel.
This reduces the risk of scratching the paint and keeps dirt from spreading across the vehicle.
Step 9: Decontaminate the Paint with Clay
After washing, inspect the paint.
If it feels rough, use a clay mitt or clay towel to remove embedded contaminants.
If necessary, reapply foam for lubrication before claying.
Rinse the clay tool regularly in your bucket to prevent contaminants from scratching the paint.
At this point you can apply an iron remover to remove brake dust or fall out that's embedded into the clear coat. Once product dwells for 1-3 mins, mitt the iron remover and rinse off the car.
Step 10: Final Rinse and Drying Aid
Rinse the vehicle completely from top to bottom.
After rinsing, apply a drying aid such as:
-
Koch Chemie Protector Wax
-
Mr. Detail Super Glo
Then perform a final rinse according to the product instructions.
Drying aids improve gloss and make drying easier.
Step 11: Dry the Vehicle
Dry the vehicle using:
-
Large microfiber drying towels
-
Compressed air
-
A vehicle blower
Start with the glass first to reduce water spotting, then move to the paint and trim.
Use air to remove water from:
-
Mirrors
-
Emblems
-
Trim
-
Door handles
This helps prevent water from dripping later.
Step 12: Begin Interior Cleaning
Open all doors and begin with a quick vacuum.
This first vacuum is simply to remove large debris and trash before blowing out the interior. This will include hand removing trash from the car that won’t fit in the vacuum.
Step 13: Blow Out the Interior
Using a blow gun, blow debris out of cracks and carpet fibers.
For SUVs or vans:
Start at the rear hatch and blow debris forward.
Move seats forward and backward to access:
-
Seat tracks
-
Under seat areas
Tight crevices
If needed, spray a carpet cleaner like Koch Chemie Pol Star or Carpet Bomber to loosen embedded dirt. Then blow afterwards this helps reduce the static and will allow the carpet to be easily blown out.
Step 14: Complete the Full Interior Vacuum
Now perform a full interior vacuum.
Since debris was loosened during the blow-out step, vacuuming becomes faster and more effective. You want to do this before doing your interior panels because when using the compressed air you will blow the dirt from the carpets on your panels.
Step 15: Extract Seats and Carpets
If the vehicle has fabric seats or heavy stains:
-
Apply carpet cleaner
-
Agitate with a brush or drill brush
-
Extract using a carpet extractor
Clean the seats and carpets early so they can dry while you finish the rest of the detail.
Use Products such as:
-
Koch Chemie Pol Star
-
Koch Chemie MZR
-
P&S Carpet Bomber
-
Mr. Detail All Surface
Step 16: Clean Interior Panels and Plastics
Spray interior cleaner onto panels and scrub with a brush or scrub pad.
Wipe clean with microfiber towels.
Use compressed air to blow out:
-
Vents
-
Cup holders
-
Buttons
-
Tight cracks
Using compressed air will help blow the dirt out of the cracks and crevices and will blow the cleaner that is built up this will prevent streaking and drips later.
Step 17: Clean the Headliner
Spray interior cleaner onto a microfiber towel rather than directly on the headliner.
Gently wipe dirty areas.
Avoid saturating the fabric to prevent damaging the adhesive underneath.
Step 18: Clean Interior and Exterior Glass
Use a two-towel method.
-
Spray glass cleaner onto the first towel
-
Clean the glass
-
Use the second towel to dry and remove streaks
Clean the top edge of the windows first by rolling them down slightly.
For the windshield:
-
Clean inside left-to-right
-
Clean outside top-to-bottom
This makes streaks easier to identify.
Step 19: Final Interior Vacuum
Perform your final vacuum.
At this stage the interior should be 100% clean, with no remaining debris.
Step 20: Reinstall Floor Mats
Once mats are dry, reinstall them properly. For rubber mats you can now apply Koch Chemie Gummifix then installed into the car.
Step 21: Clean Door Jambs
Clean door jambs using a spray sealant or wax such as:
-
Mr. Detail Miracle
-
P&S Bead Maker
-
Koch Chemie Spray Sealant
This adds gloss while removing dirt and fingerprints.
Step 22: Apply Tire Dressing
By now the tires should be dry.
Apply tire dressing before waxing or polishing to prevent sling or overspray on freshly finished paint. Include dressing in the wheel wells of the car if they have plastic liners.
Step 23: Wax, Seal, or Polish the Paint
Depending on the service package:
Wax or Sealant
Spray product onto the paint and buff using microfiber towels.
Machine Polish
Tape sensitive trim and use a dual action polisher with appropriate pads.
Polish one panel at a time and wipe residue away.
Many professionals apply a spray sealant afterward for protection.
Step 24: Final Wheel Cleaning
Use a two-towel method to wipe the wheels using spray wax or foam glass cleaner. This removes water spots and leaves the wheels looking finished.
Step 25: Final Inspection
Perform a full walk-around and check:
-
Paint
-
Trim
-
Glass
-
Engine bay
-
Wheels
-
Interior surfaces
Touch up anything that needs attention.
This step ensures no missed spots before delivering the vehicle.
Step 26: Return the Vehicle to the Customer
Once the vehicle passes your inspection, it is ready to be returned to the customer looking clean, glossy, and fully detailed.
